This "typeface" is a set of illustrations (worth about $500) which I am providing to those who have "reviewed" my typefaces that I have uploaded to CompuServe.
That's right. This one is free* (see conditions of use, below).
Load the bitmap file into the system file and place the laserwriter font in the system folder, just like any downloadable font.
There are only 6 available characters. Remember the following key map:
a= an "artistic illustration"
w= a macintosh window. (those among you who are clever will figure out a way to use this window as a background for your own illustrations that you prepare in MacPaint or MacDraw or similar program. If you type this character in MacDraw, then import it into PageMaker, then use some other illustration to "cover" it, you'll have a really nice window display; you'll also have to "cover" the title bar with your own titles or put up with mine.)
m= a macintosh with an empty (but on) screen
j=a menu bar
k=a window with the illustration at a in it (also with a menu bar)
l=a window with a menu bar
if you type:
mj then you'll get a mac with a menu bar
ml then you'll get a mac with a menu bar and an empty window
mk then you'll get a mac with a menu bar and a window filled with the illustration available at "a".
Why did I set it up this way?!
Just hard-headed, I guess. But it does afford you a good deal of flexibility to "enhance" the provided images. (By the way, the bitmap versions are only black filled outlines of the characters. You'll have to take it on faith because this font is WYSINECTWYG!!)
It is best if you use a 127 point size or greater. (This means that in MS Word or PageMaker, the max size available.)
If you don't know how to get larger sizes, it's easy if you have the right software.
First, type any of the above combinations in MacDraw. Save as a PICT file. Open PageMaker, Word, or MacWrite (when using the word processors, copy and paste the letters to the Scrapbook first) and Place (in PageMkr) or copy and paste from the Scrapbook. Select the "picture" by clicking on it, then click and hold on one of the corner control points, hold down the shift key (this ensures proportional scaling- of course, you can distort this if you want to) and stretch the graphic as large as you want it (fill as much of the page as you can for best reproduction of the illustrations).
If you just type the image in, the "letters" a and w will left justify, right justify, and center justify. The "m" will only left justify. If you need to have it centered or right justified, then you will have to use one of the combinations or mj, mk, or ml.
You might be wondering why I'm doing this. Maybe, you can't believe your good fortune (ie., having a mac/laserwriter and access to some of the best computer graphics in the world).
You may have become aware that I have uploaded several LaserWriter fonts on a public bulletin board, for your convenience, or your review, or your consideration, or whatever you did with them.
One subscriber, and member of MAUG sent me some Email and verbally abused me. Said I was an "ass hole" for not saying that a font I uploaded was a sample. That it was protected. Said it cost him $$$. (*I am aware of how much it cost to download files, and for that particular font it might have only been $$, but probably closer to $.) He was definately angry. It cost me money (I don't really have to spend) just to read his mail. (I am a truck driver most of my time, and I was shocked. I thought this was a "respectable" place to "hang out". As a result, I am resigning from MAUG altogether, and erasing my typefaces. If you are interested, then you can contact me by mail to the following address: 14754 Riverforest Dr., Houston, Texas, 77079. I am moving from the above address and a member of my family will see that I get your correspondence.)
When I wrote back and tried to explain that it costs to make the font (and it does, $$$!!!) and that people only took the first few I uploaded (they didn't pay for them - except for 1 person - nor did they tell me what they found wrong with them so I could make them better - like I asked), he replied by calling me an "ass hole" again...
I am not a "big time" telecommunications user and maybe I missed something in the protocol of same. Maybe I felt that I could provide something that could be reviewed first, considered, then purchased if the user felt they would find it useful in some sort of way. Maybe I felt like I was being ripped off. Maybe I did it to be mean. Maybe I felt nobody would even look at them if the fonts were only samples. Maybe I was tired and forgot to mention it. Maybe there is only a certain number of words that can be typed in the descriptions, and I didn't have enough room to mention it. Maybe you can pick any of the above that best suits your perception of how people are and what they are trying to pull. Maybe I don't care.
Maybe I do.
You won't know till you know me.
Back to this "font".
It is FREE. That's right!
I have found that there is really no point in asking for you contributions (either money - preferred - or criticism - useful). I only want to raise the level of "desktop publishing" - I hate that term - to the same kind of capability as the more traditional forms of typesetting (ie., borders, illustrated or illuminated letters, and fonts, fonts, fonts!). Typography is an ART as well as a craft. That makes me a starving artist. I had hoped to be able to generate some income from this endevour to pay for some of the programs I have tried and liked. As soon as I resign, I am destroying all my copies of "shareware" that I cannot afford (Packit III, Red Ryder, and MockPackage are the only ones I have used, but I won't need them any more. This documentation is prepared in MS Word. I'll use Packit one more time, only for your convenience. I'll still have MacTerminal if the need arises for file transfers.)
Conditions for public or commercial use:
You have the right to use these illustrations in any way you see fit, alter their appearance by use of Italic, bold, outline, shadow, or any combination available from the font style menu, alter their appearance by scaling (using the method described above), AS LONG AS YOU INCLUDE (SOMEWHERE NEAR THE ILLUSTRATION) THE FOLLOWING: ILLUSTRATION BY FRANCIS X. MAHONEY, JR. - HOUSTON.
in NO LESS THAN 6 POINT TYPESIZE.
I demand the credit! That is all. You can truncate illustration to Illus if you want, just make sure I get the credit for the work. Like I said, there is about $500 worth of freebies here - it is not too much to ask in return.
If you can't live with this, then destroy it. This is not shareware. You are not to distribute this "font" in any way to anybody. It is available only for a very short time to CompuServe (MAUG) members only (and really only for those people that have reviewed my fonts or for those that may have been vexed by the protection scheme or both. For those that reviewed my fonts - your silence speaks loudly to me. For everybody, accept this as an apology for wasting your money, if you can.)
